Evelina Childrens Hospital, Guys & St Thomas’s Hospital
As a Project Director at Hopkins Architects, Andrew led the team developing the competition winning design for St Thomas’s new Childrens hospital. Hopkins won the commission through a RIBA competition. Andrew led the practice’s team and consultant team through the detailed briefing, detailed design and construction phases of the project working closely with Gleeson who were appointed by the Trust to construct the building.
The project achieved high acclaim, winning the 2nd place ‘People’s vote’ in the 2005 Stirling Prize, with the outright winner Barajas Airport by Richard Rogers. The project involved many challenges not least the aim to create a child friendly healing environment which also provided medical care and excellence. Often hospitals are dominated by the more institutional nature. Hopkins concept addressed this from the start by proposing a large atrium giving all the inpatient bed spaces on upper floors views over Bishop’s Park. This strategic design move was a key factor in the practice winning the competition.
Working with Buro Happold (structural engineers), and Hoare Lea (M&E) and FEDRA (fire engineers), Hopkins developed the technical aspects of the design.
